    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

    Sharanbasaveshwar College of Science, Gulbarga has been established as a single faculty Science Institution in 1956 by Sharnbasaveshwar Vidya Vardhak Sangha, Gulbarga. Chemistry as one of the major and minor subjects has been introduced in the same year.

    From 1981, three equal optional subjects were introduced as per UGC guidelines. Chemistry is one of the optional subject including three combinations such as 1.Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2.Chemistry, Botany and Zoology.3. Industrial Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Since from the introduction of chemistry as an optional subject, the Department is showing exponential progress rate. At present there are three well equipped laboratories with capacity of 40 students in each. The laboratory having highly sophisticated modern equipments and are useful for the students and staff continuing the academic and research work.

    Research work has been carried out and sanctioned three projects by UGC-SWRO and completed successfully. During this academic year there are more than 650 students were studying in B.Sc. I/III/V semester classes with chemistry as one of the optional subjects. There are five permanent faculty members and five full time faculty members appointed by the management one attender among them three are M.Phil. Ph.D. and two are Ph.D. holders. The Department is involved in the extension research work and co-curricular activities along with their academic work. The Department has started C.O.P namely the certificate course in Water analysis, which is sponsored by the U.G.C and approved by Gulbarga University and also started the value added course on human values and professional ethics. The Department conducts Annual Industrial/Study tours/Institute visit/field work for students to various important industries and institute to get firsthand experience of projects. The department of chemistry organizes various Bridge course/remedial course/seminars/work-shops/special lectures/field works every year for the benefit of students and staff members.

    To provide quality education, foster creative ideas and promote innovative human enterprise with inspiration initiatives for academic excellence, research to meet the global challenges in Chemistry.

    MISSION

    To empower students with enhance knowledge in independent learning skills; build in them confidence and leadership qualities. Provide inputs beyond curriculum and enable the professional development for enhanced employability and engage in the education, service and research activities and create awareness about the applicative potential of discoveries and inventions in Chemistry for better healthcare.

    OBJECTIVES

    1. The Department is planning to conduct National and International level Seminars.
    2. Invite eminent Professors from various Universities to conduct special lectures.
    3. Invite more & more Pharmaceutical and Industrial delegates to get opportunities for the students.
    4. Educational visits to industries to get Practical knowledge.
    5. To train the students for competitive exams such as IIT-JAM, IAS, KAS.

    STRENGTHS:
    1. Qualified, experienced and dedicated teaching faculty with good retention ratio.
    2. Faculty contributing in design development and implementation of
    3. curriculum in Board of Studies of an Affiliating University.
    4. Effective use of ICT in teaching learning process.
    5. Student centric functioning with mentoring, counseling through teachers and Effective academic monitoring.

    WEAKNESS:
    1. Less Industry – Institute interaction.
    2. Moderate Placement ratio.
    3. Involvement of Alumni at Institute level is less.

    OPPORTUNITIES:
    1. To arrange more number of FDPs /STTPS/ National Level /International conferences.
    2. To arrange specialized Training programs by the faculty.
    3. Scope for interdisciplinary and sponsored projects.

    CHALLENGES:
    1. Strengthen Industry-Institute Interaction.
    2. More placements in core companies.
    3. Encouraging students for competitive examinations and higher studies.
    4. Networking and strengthening relationship with stakeholders.
    5. More focus on Industrial training for faculty and students.
    6. Girl students with varied socio- economic background.
